A healthier 30% urban tree canopy is achievable for major urban areas, by planting trees, not more than 30 feet apart, along city sidewalks. It is an easy win, that improves quality of life for people and planet.
The paradigm shift , to build capacity to scale at an accelerated rate, is to involve local forestry businesses as action partners and fast launch with easy actionable templates. NPO operational models, though having achieved admirable results in community awareness, do not lend to accelerated scale. Planting events in the current models are, mostly on Saturdays, when volunteers are available.
We are at a unique inflection point for our planet and species with heat thresholds for sustenance is fast approaching cause for concern. A growing scientific consensus is predicting crop failures in near future and disruptions to food chain, among other downstream impacts.
Urban Tree canopy project is an accelerated effort to catch up on nature deficit in urban areas.
Anything less will fall short to mitigate the climate crisis, that we now face, with business-as-usual models.

Trees are one of many tools in the box for giving the planet a helping hand. One advantage it has is being a ‘low tech’ model that any community can run with, with minimal training. Additionally, it will create jobs locally in communities, boosting economies similar to highways initiatives.
